The January 1st, 1994 Zapatista uprising brought international attention to the poor, rural and predominantly indigenous state of Chiapas. Even with the signing of the San Andrés Accords in February 1996 between the Mexican government and the Zapatistas rebels, a low intensity war continues. The indigenous peoples of Chiapas (to borrow a phrase from journalist/historian John Ross) are truly engaged in a “war against oblivion”.
