The January 1st, 1994 Zapatista uprising brought international attention to the poor, rural and predominantly indigenous state of Chiapas. Even with the signing of the San Andrés Accords in February 1996 between the Mexican government and the Zapatistas rebels, a low intensity war continues. The indigenous peoples of Chiapas (to borrow a phrase from journalist/historian John Ross) are truly engaged in a “war against oblivion”.

Joseph,
Awesome posts and information, keeping us update on your adventure. I have shared your blog address with your younger cousins (Annie, Elle, Calli, Max, Sage, Blake) as it will be a wonderful learning experience for them. Grandpa B. has you in his "favorites" and is so proud of you. Keep up the good work.
Love you,
MOM
